In mid 2020, Frame Labs was hired by Aurora Labs, a Perth-based company building large-scale metal 3D printers, to create a VR training demo that walked users through how to load and unload one of their machines.
The demo had two clear goals. First, it acted as a practical training tool that could teach the correct workflow safely and consistently. Second, it became a surprisingly effective trade-show piece, because it let people experience the process and the scale of the equipment without the cost and logistics of transporting a van-sized metal printer to an event.
My work on the project included:
Cleaning up and optimising Aurora’s CAD models for real-time rendering
Building interactive VR systems in Unity to support hands-on operation
Implementing a clear step-by-step guided workflow inside the headset, so users could follow the correct procedure from start to finish
This project was the first use of my hand interacting posing system.
